Nya Sydafrika 2019-02-11
Vi gjorde en resa genom det som i vinvärlden kallas det nya Sydafrika, baserat delvis på gruppen ”The Zoo Biscuits” och föregångarna “The Swartland Revolution”, producenter som lyfts fram av bl.a. Tim James (redaktör på Platter). Det som sammanfattar är att det är vinmakare som ofta vill gå en helt ny väg, bort från den stil som tidigare varit typisk för vad vi kanske är vana vid med sydafrikanska viner
Här är några ord om en av de mest hyllade nya vinmakarna, Eben Sadie, och ganska talande för dessa nya vinmakare: ”Prior to his career as a winemaker, following a period as a surfer, Eben Sadie traveled and worked in several of the world’s wineregions, including Germany, Austria, Italy, Oregon and Burgundy. Having returned to South Africa, Sadie found work under Charles Back at The Spice Route in 1998, eventually becoming the chief winemaker and a resource Back described as ”national asset for the South African wine industry”.”

Druvor: 87% Chenin Blanc, 6,5% Grenache Blanc, 6,5% Viogner
Stunning, all rounder there is nothing you can fault in this wine. Aromas of candied lemon, cooked apple and mango with a core of minerality. Soft and voluptuous, it has a lovely ripeness and a fleshy, creamy mouthfeel, which leads to a perfect tangy freshness giving some zip to its otherwise mellow feel.
Of the countless number of Blankbottle wines that I’ve had the privilege to try Moment of Silence has always been my favourite. Lush, generous and honeyed but with lively clarity and tension, it is, to my mind, BLANKbottle at its very best, which is why I’m especially glad to be a. – Cellartracker

Julien Schaal’s South African 2017 Elgin Chardonnay Evidence offers a clear, bright, fresh and elegant nose of ripe fruits intertwined with noble sur lie aromas. Silky and very elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied but concentrated, lush and well-structured wine with remarkable finesse and lingering salinity. Wikipedia: Following the emergence of flagship wines Columella and Palladius, winemaker Eben Sadie has been described as an enfant terrible, South Africa’s first certified celebrity winemaker, and by supporters as ”one of the greatest and most original winemakers in the southern hemisphere” and he has also branched out to other wine regions such as in Spain.

Druvor: 100% Pinot Noir
The 2015 Ignis Pinot Noir, the new name for the Moya’s Pinot Noir, is matured in 25% new oak. It has a delightful bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and crushed rose petal aromas that seem to blossom in the glass. The palate is crisp and vibrant on the entry with blood orange notes piercing the tart red cherry fruit. I appreciate the cohesion and freshness here, though at the moment it remains quite linear. 2015 JH Meyer Wines Elands River Pinot Noir, Elandskloof (Wine Rebels, BS). 256 kr
Druvor: 100% Pinot Noir
The 2014 Elands Rivier, which comes from sandstone soils, shows the stem addition much more vividly than the 2014 Palmiet, so it comes across more herbaceous and tertiary. The palate is medium-bodied with noticeable acidity and moderate weight in the mouth, with that herbaceous note coming through towards the finish. Luddite Shiraz 2012, Luddite Wines, WO Cape South Coast (nr 79473, Handpicked Wines, BS). 346 kr
Druvor: 100% Shiraz
The 2013 Shiraz, which spent 24 months in barrel (20% new oak), has a big bold bouquet with black cherries, mulberry, blueberry and marmalade, blooms of incense developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, full-bodied with layers of black fruit, spicy with white pepper, with a muscular finish that conveys the cooler season. – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate 89RP (review of 2013)
Family Vineyards Granum 2015, Newton Johnson (Vingruppen, RS). 229 kr
Druvor: 75% Syrah, 25% Mourvedre
The 2014 Granum is a blend of 30% Mourvedre and 70% bush vine Syrah, the vines planted at 7,000 per hectare, aged in 500-liter oak for 12 months. It has a sensual floral component on the nose, hints of peony and rose petal infusing the red berry fruit, black pepper emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, the coolness of the growing season pervading this Rhône blend, blessed with fine balance and precision on the finish that offers just the right amount of dryness to urge you back. Enjoy this refined Hemel-en-Aarde/Northern Rhône hybrid over the next 7-8 years. – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate 91RP (review of 2014)
Elpidios 2015, David & Nadia, Swartland (nr 79032, Quaffable Wines,BS). 339 kr
Druvor: 30% Syrah, 28% Carignan, 17% Cinsault, 14% Grenache, 11% Pinotage
The 2014 Elpidios (which is now under the David & Nadia label) is a blend of 30% Syrah, 28% Carignan, 17% Cinsault, 14% Grenache and 11% Pinotage from seven vineyards of shale, schist, granite and iron-rich soils. Matured for 20 months in old 500-liter barrels, it has a composed bouquet with raspberry, cranberry leaf and light lavender scents. It is very floral. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, an open-knit and generous blend that expresses harmony and refinement on the finish, a saline tang lingering on the aftertaste.
David and Nadia excelled in 2015 and as usual, their wines are recommended.– Neal Martin, Wine Advocate 93RP
